Thwarted terrorist, Bahadur Najafi, is a senior operative of MOIS, the Iranian Secret service organisation. He has vowed revenge on Justin Parkes whom he blames for the failure of his mission in the UK. He goes to ground in a safe house with a proscribed Iranian opposition group in the Midlands using the identity of an executed Iranian.
Justin Parkes is invited to MI5 HQ to receive award for his earlier part in destroying Najafi’s terror cell. He’ told that Najafi will likely seek him out and kill him. Justin agrees reluctantly to act as a lure to flush him out. Is taken on on a temporary six month contract with MI5 and allocated a firearms trained female agent, Maggie Challinor, for protection. She is someone who has worked with him previously and to whom Justin is romantically attached.
Najafi in a safe house discovers that a MOIS agent has infiltrated the Iranian opposition group group he is with, and he has to kill her to safeguard his identity. He then has to leave immediately before he is implicated in her death. He returns to Shrewsbury where he is able to use a flat he has previously rented for his communications expert who is now back in Iran and who has been interrogated by MOIS, unwittingly revealing that Najafi is now out of control.
MOIS realising that Najafi is a rogue element, and to ensure he is not captured and implicates the Iranian government, despatch an assassin they call The Angel of Death to the UK to kill him. (There is a chapter which develops Angel and her past). Angel cleverly deduces where Najafi will be and goes to Shrewsbury to find him.
MI5 have placed two protection agents in the flat below Justin’s. But one, Taffy Morgan, takes an irrational and dangerous dislike to Justin which later puts him in grave danger.
Najafi plans to kidnap Justin in order to inflict on him a slow and painful death. He holds hostage a female friend of his, Lynn, at her house and sends a text using her mobile to Justin asking him to call. Unsuspectingly, Justin calls on her without telling Maggie but unbeknown to him Morgan decides not to follow him. Justin is overpowered and semi-conscious is taken away in Najafi’s car. Unable to leave a witness, Najafi shoots Lynn in the head. Instead of shooting her twice he makes a mistake in his hurry and only shoots her once but she survives though seriously wounded.
Justin is taken to the remote deserted farmhouse where the terrorist cell previously had their HQ. Najafi ties Justin to a chair with his mouth taped and goes back to his flat intending to leave him alone for two days to soften him up. But when he returns and starts to torture Justin, Angel, who is lying in wait at the farmhouse shoots Najafi dead.
Meanwhile, Maggie realising Justin is missing informs MI5 and tries to contact Lynn. Goes to her house and discovers her unconscious and seriously wounded. Taken to hospital where she makes a full recovery apart from losing one eye.
For the next 24 hours MI5, and the local police search in vain for Justin. Acting on a hunch, Maggie and her back-up team race to the farmhouse where Justin is being held and find him in at the brink of death after three days tied to a chair. Taken to hospital, Justin eventually recovers. Justin and Maggie, realise how strong their love is for each other. Justin asks Maggie to marry him and she agrees. END
